I know I am not an expert on adoptions by any means... but I am convinced that in order to adopt, one has to do a lot of soul searching.
Not only is the decision to adopt a life-altering moment which will affect your finances, day-to-day life, and family structure, it will ALSO affect another person's life by giving a child a family.
I have studied adoptions for the past few years.
I think everyone who is considering adoption should think about a few ideas... you have choices to make.
Are you open to race?
Do you have a preference for the sex of the child?
What about age?
Correctable vs. Non-correctable health concerns? (i.e. A cleft lip which can be fixed vs. downs syndrome which is a lifelong issue)
Are you open to adopting only infants? What about toddlers? Young children? Teenagers?
What about a sibling group? Twins?
Would you want to adopt internationally? A private adoption within the United States? Foster-to-adopt programs?
Are you aware of the costs associated with the adoption?
Would you want an agency or would you prefer working with a lawyer to find you a child?
What does your family think about the adoption? Spouse? Other children? Its not just you adopting a child, they'd be adopting a sibling.
The one thing that I say is this: YOU and YOUR FAMILY are the ones adopting. YOU need to decide if it is right for you. YOU need to decide if it is right for your family. And YOU need to decide what type of child or children you're open to.
And know that you'll always have support from me regardless of what you choose. There are a lot of kids out there. More than we can imagine!
