It is official... the LDS Church is going to cease adoptions through LDS Family Services.
And you know what? I'm fine with it.
For those not aware, for many years the LDS Church has subsidized the costs of adoptions for members of the church. Thousands of infants have been adopted by members of the church. However, now, they will not be handling any more adoption cases. Instead, they'll focus on helping people looking to adopt and be more of a referral service---letting current and future families know of other agencies.|
I think this is a good step. I think that more and more families will turn to traditional organizations to adopt. We'll likely see an initial drop in adoptions within the LDS church as many members will say it is too costly to adopt---but then I think it will rise again.
From my friends within the LDS adoption community, I have learned that most agencies do not have long waiting lists compared with LDS Family Services. Some of my friends have said they waited 2 weeks for a referral when they switched from LDSFS----the adoption was through a non-church based agency.
Single members of the church would never have been considered for a potential adoptive family anyway. And I am not worried about adopting a newborn although MANY people want only newborns. I'm happy with going through a non-LDS agency, paying more, and then getting my little unwanted harder-to-adopt African son. :)
