The Weeds are a married couple. He is gay. She is straight. They've announced they're divorcing after several years of marriage. I feel sad for them because it is always sad when divorce happens.
I'd like to say I am shocked and surprised, but I'm really not... I have met dozens of marriages like this couple in the past. The vast majority are now divorced. That isn't to discourage anyone from however they want to live their lives. It is just the reality. In the LDS Church community, people like the Weeds are seen as the "final end" or "winners" in the game of life. Their path is seen as the only acceptable path for homosexual church members: Marry in the LDS Church to someone of the opposite sex.
The sad reality is that this limited form of happiness excludes the majority of the members who are homosexual and choose other paths. It is estimated that 80-90% of homosexual church members have little or nothing to do with the church. Those who are in committed relationships have even less to do with the church than those who are single.
Older LDS Singles wards are full of homosexual members. Gradually, they usually stop attending church or wanting much to do with it.
I always teach my kids that apologies help to begin healing.
It is a tough road to be gay and LDS.
I think that the Weed family is finally realizing how tough it is.
They've apologized for hurting anyone in the past.
Now, I have to wonder, what the LDS church and community can do to apologize for the hurt and pain they've caused in the past as well?
