When you're working in an adoption, it can be overwhelming to think about so many aspects of it.
There are literally millions of orphans around the world who need homes. Bringing in one might not seem like much of a difference. There would still be millions of babies and children without parents.
I love the movie Cloud Atlas. I have only seen it once, but I think about the movie's message all the time. One of being connected to others in the world and history, making a difference with eternal differences, and changing perspectives... Its beautiful.
In the movie, a man named Adam decides to defy his father-in-law. Instead of joining in the slave-trade business, he has chosen to become an abolitionist. Adam had his life saved by an escaped slave and learned the inhumanity of slavery in the process.
His father-in-law tells him:
"No matter what you do it will never amount to anything more than a single drop in a limitless ocean."
To which, Adam replies... "What is an ocean but a multitude of drops?"
Granted, my adoption won't change the face of the world. There will still be millions of orphans. But my little drop in an ocean of adopting Kabaale will change the course of my family's history and the people around him, and me, for the rest of eternity. My grandchildren with dark skin will know me as their grandfather. Those grandchildren wouldn't exist without this little drop in the ocean of me adopting one single child.
Its a beautiful message.
