As many of you know, on Saturday my first placement moved in... He is a little 5 year old boy named Jack.
Well, his name isn't really Jack. But it is the name I choose to call him publicly in social media to protect his identity. For the same reasons, I will not discuss his past except in general terms.
His father and mother each have their own list of problem behaviors. The father doesn't seem interested in being a parent. The mother does care---but has made some very bad personal mistakes and is working through them. Same with her whole side of the family---lots of personal mistakes. You can tell that Jack and his mother (as well as grandmother) care for each other but are just not able to live together.
That is where foster families come into play.
We are able to provide that safety and stability while the biological families get their lives in order.
Tonight, I met them. While I find their behavior in the past to be disturbing, I pity them.
Right now, due to their choices, someone else tucks their son in at night. Someone else reads his stories. Someone else was there for the first day of school.
Regardless of what happens---if Jack goes home or stays---I hope that its possible to remain friendly.
