Browsing Facebook, I see a lot of people talking about Kim Davis, the county clerk who refuses to issue any marriage licenses due to her religious convictions. It seems like many of her opponents have chosen to criticize her appearance...
Here are my thoughts on her beauty:
"Does it really matter?"
Not in the slightest.
If she was a glamorous supermodel type, I'd still be just as frustrated with her as I would be with her looking like a sack of potatoes. Why? Because she is taking this to the extreme.
It is a really poor move to criticize her appearance because it just goes to a low-level. It isn't taking the high-road, at all. How would anyone gain people's support if they're seen as petty?
I realize that religious beliefs are very near to the heart of the believer. I am religious, myself. Due to those beliefs, I make decisions everyday about my career, lifestyle, after-work activities, etc. If I had a deeply held religious belief against using electricity, I wouldn't become a computer technician. Right now, her livelihood is at stake which must be frustrating---she has had this job for several years. Her beliefs are in conflict right now which must be frustrating for her.
While I can feel sorry for her position, it doesn't mean I agree with it. She is not fulfilling her government-sponsored job and has been brought to court repeatedly (both on her choosing and being forced to) and STILL refuses to do her job. Fines, alone, wouldn't help the situation because I'm sure she has many supporters who would try to raise money for her. (Evidently GoFundMe doesn't allow any Kim Davis supporters...) She is an elected official and with that comes specific obligations to her job. If she is not comfortable doing those obligations, then she needs to step down.
If I was an elected dog catcher but I refused to actually capture the dogs because I believed they should be free, that doesn't mean I should be able to just sit and not do my job. I shouldn't tell a neighboring county's dog catcher to come and do my work. I shouldn't be upset if people say I'm a bad person for not doing my job either.
This is a "Put on your big boy\big girl pants and move on!" sort of moments.
And if you want to criticize her, do so without saying she looks like a sack of potatoes or needs a makeover or something. Talk about the issues, talk about your position, but don't resort to playground antics in making fun of her lack of fashion sense.
