I love fruit smoothies in the morning. And at night. And during the middle of the day.
For Christmas, I bought a huge box of 30 lbs of Oranges. While most of them are gone, I still have about 12 pounds of oranges which are getting softer and while they're not bad to eat, they're not the prettiest of fruit. So I wouldn't want to give them away.
So I looked online for smoothies using whole peeled oranges. I found a few options, but I decided to come up with my own.
5 small-medium seedless oranges peeled (Throw the peel of one in your garbage disposal or put them in your compost if you can!) These will average to be about 52 calories each. (About 200-250 calories total)
1 Cup Apple Juice (100% all-natural juice is a must!) About 50 calories
1 Cup Ice (No calories!)
1 half cup yogurt (I like strawberry in mine!) ... works out to be about 80-100 calories
Blend together until smooth.
If you'd like to make it more like an Orange-Julius, add a half teaspoon of vanilla and substitute the apple juice for milk to make it more frothy. (Is Frothy a word?)
In total, the pitcher is between 320-400 calories. That is enough for 3 tall glasses of smoothie. It is 400% of the daily Vitamin C needs. If you use the yogurt, you get the healthy probiotics.
No sugar added. Only fat comes from the yogurt and you could even substitute almond milk if you're anti-dairy. I think Almond milk goes great in smoothies. You could also use water instead of apple juice although the flavor won't be as sweet.
My breakfast consists of two glasses of this in the morning for about 250 calories or so, tons of vitamins, natural juice, etc.
